A break feels complete when the whole family comes along, and for many of us that includes the dog. The Hamlet is well set up for four-legged guests, and a shepherd’s hut suits them rather well: warm, easy to settle into, and steps from open ground to explore. Here is what to know before you book.
Booking a dog-friendly hut
A number of our huts welcome well-behaved dogs for a small additional fee. Because only selected huts are dog-friendly, it is best to book in advance and let us know your dog is coming, so we can put you in a suitable hut. If you book online, you can add your dog to the reservation as you go. One thing to check beforehand: a few breeds are not permitted, so do get in touch if you are unsure whether we can welcome yours.
Walks from your doorstep
Part of the appeal of bringing your dog is how much walking there is close by. There are woodland trails within the grounds of Samlesbury Hall, so the first walk of the day can begin the moment you step out of the hut. When you want to venture further, Brockholes nature reserve is around ten minutes away with lakeside paths, and the wider Ribble Valley offers proper hill walking, with Pendle Hill about thirty minutes’ drive for anyone after bigger views.
Evenings by the fire
Dogs tend to take to the fire pit as quickly as everyone else. Once dinner is done and the flames have settled, most are happy to curl up at your feet while you toast a s’more or two. Bring their bed or a familiar blanket and they will settle in no time.
A few things to pack
Along with the usual lead, bowls and food, it is worth bringing a towel for muddy paws, as Lancashire trails can be soft underfoot after rain. A torch is useful for the last walk of the evening, since the grounds are genuinely dark and peaceful at night. Beyond that, the huts provide bedding and towels for you, so there is less to think about and more room in the car for the dog.
A shepherd’s hut, a fire pit and miles of countryside to sniff out. For a lot of dogs, and their owners, that is close to a perfect weekend.
