Step into History with Lady Jane Southworth

Bring your class to Samlesbury Hall, one of Lancashire’s finest preserved medieval manor houses. Built in 1325, this stunning black-and-white timbered Hall is rich with nearly 700 years of stories—from noble families and religious turmoil to legends, witchcraft, and folklore. Its atmospheric rooms, original features, and immersive exhibits make it the perfect setting for young historians to experience the past firsthand.

During your visit, children are guided room-by-room by Lady Jane Southworth herself, discovering the history of the Hall through the eyes of the Southworth family. Each space reveals a different layer of Tudor life, sparking curiosity and encouraging pupils to imagine what daily life was like centuries ago.

Using an engaging compare-and-contrast approach, Lady Jane invites pupils to think deeply about how the world has changed. What’s different between a Tudor meal and their own dinner table? How would a room feel without electricity, heating, or carpet? Through lively discussion, children explore differences in food, clothing, toys, schooling, punishments, and home life—making history real, vivid, and memorable.

Along the way, pupils learn about key moments and figures in Tudor England, including Henry VIII and the Reformation, the secret work of Nicholas Owen, and the wider political and religious shifts that shaped the period.

Teachers can also choose whether their class hears the famous stories of Samlesbury Hall’s friendly ghost Dorothea or the haunting tale of the Samlesbury witches. Most groups love these stories, but we are always happy to tailor the experience—just let us know in advance.

After a one-hour lunch break, the visit concludes with a fun Tudor quiz, giving pupils the chance to show off what they’ve learned. It’s always a highlight!
