GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS

Samlesbury Hall is reputedly one of the most haunted houses in Great Britain, with 13 different ghosts which haunt the historic manor and the grounds around it.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there have been many hundreds of reports from guests, staff and former inhabitants of the house which date back centuries.  Our ghosts are not a contemporary fabrication, but a genuine heritage of haunting encounters.  The first published account of ghosts at Samlesbury Hall dates back to a book written in 1873.

Despite its haunting reputation, the atmosphere at Samlesbury Hall is warm and welcoming, and all our ghosts fall into the ‘friendly’ category.

At Samlesbury Hall we celebrate our haunted heritage and take our ghosts seriously.  Since 2023 we have run an on-going research project called The Samlesbury Hall Ghost Project.  The project records witness testimonies, historic encounters and data from other sources and allows us to accurately record and document our supernatural heritage

Just had a fantastic visit to Samlesbury Hall with the family and was regaled with numerous ghost stories by the very knowledgeable Ian. Looking forward to doing some more research into the history of the place and will surely be back soon!

MEET OUR GHOSTS...

Our most famous phantom is that of Lady Dorothea Southworth.  Often called ‘The Lady in White’, she has haunted the house and grounds since Elizabethan times.  Her story is recounted to visitors using audio and visual media in our Ghost Room, which is located in the attic of the house and was opened for the first time in 700 years in Autumn 2023.

For those with a particular interest in the Samlesbury Hall Spirit World we present a variety of different events which the public can take part in.  These include our Torchlight Tours, which is a guided tour by torchlight with an emphasis on the ghosts and mysteries of the Hall.

For those who are brave enough our Great Victorian Ghost Hunt event offers guests the chance to join The Samlesbury Hall Ghost Project on an interactive investigation inside the Hall during the hours of darkness.  Unlike all other ghost hunting events, The Great Victorian Ghost Hunt adopts the methods which psychical researchers used in the Victorian age.

Please note that we no longer allow external groups to hold their own ghost hunting events at the Hall, instead we ask people to take part in our own supernatural events.  You can find these events here.

If you have had a supernatural experience at Samlesbury Hall, we would love to hear about it.  Please contact us to tell us all about it.

Have you had a ghostly experience whilst at the hall?

We would love to hear from you as part of The Samlesbury Hall Ghost Project which is dedicated to cataloguing and investigating the spectral happenings at the hall.
